Jerry Garcia's 7-4-89 Deal Solo with the Grateful Dead – Lick 10 of 12
Lick 10
- For a lot of this solo, Jerry has been making the changes. Meaning, that he addresses each chord very uniquely – for example, targeting the fifth of every chord, as we talked about in lick 7. In this lick, we have a different approach, where we’re using part of the A major pentatonic scale over most of the chords here.
- This is one of the secrets of being a great soloist in the modern era – when you’re playing songs with a lot of chord changes, experiment in places where one scale would work over many of the chords. This is very much a trial and error process. Sometimes, this learning happens in the practice room, sometimes it happens on stage!
