Jerry Garcia's 7-4-89 Deal Solo with the Grateful Dead – Lick 7 of 12
Lick 7
- In this lick, Jerry is using three approaches in tandem.
- First, we have the idea of using chromaticism, or consecutive half tones, that we talked about in the previous lick.
Second, Jerry targets the 5th of pretty much every chord in this lick. - Third, we have a rhythmic motif that hooks our ears and makes us want to hear whats going to happen next.
- At the end over the A chord, we have the intervallic approach – Jerry uses sixths, just like he did over lick 5.
