Welcome to part 2 of John Mayer's solo on Brown Eyed Women. In this lesson we're going to look at two more note for note licks from John Mayer's solo on the July 23rd 2016 version of this Grateful Dead tune, as played with Dead & Company at the Gorge Amphitheater.
This lesson will focus on two of Mayer's signature techniques, the Major 7th Pedal Steel box, and the Prebend pull off.

Lick 3
- For the first bar of this lick, all of the notes are coming out of the C#m pentatonic, which has the same notes as E major pentatonic.
C# Minor Pentatonic Scale
Major 7th Pedal Steel box
After that, we get to the meat of this lick in bar 43, which is centered around the Major 7th Pedal Steel box.
This box is centered around the E major scale in the E shape, which we talked about in lick one:
Classic Telecaster Bends
There are multiple places on the fretboard that you can bend like John Mayer does in Bar 43. Here are the two most common examples:
Lick 4
- Over the A chord in bar 44, Mayer uses the same approach we talked about before – playing chord tones of the A chord, while adding notes of the E major scale (the parent major scale of the progression).
- He then shifts to the E major pentatonic bends in the E shape, and uses this from bar 45 until the rest of the lick.
Prebend Pulloff
- In bar 46 he does a pre bend pull off. Many guitar players use one, and whats interesting is that this is a signature lick for Mayer, Jerry Garcia, and Trey Anastasio. You've probably heard all three people use this lick.
- For this lick, he prebends up, plucks, and then releases and pulls off. This is one of those licks that sounds good at slow, medium and fast tempos.
