Welcome to part 3 of this tutorial, where you'll learn how to jam over Bathtub Gin by Phish.

In this part of the lesson, you'll learn three different approaches that Trey Anastasio uses to improvise in the jam section of Bathtub.

The Bathtub Gin jam primarily revolves around a C7 harmony.

There are three approaches that you must learn if you want to play cool lines over the Bathtub Gin jam, or over a C7 vamp.

  • C7 Chord tones – also known as the C7 arpeggio
  • C minor Blues Scale
  • C Mixolydian mode

First, you should memorize and experiment with each approach separately.

Once you get more comfortable,  you can play around with mixing each of these approaches, as I demonstrate in this video.

Don't get discouraged if your lines don't sound cool at first!

I wish I had a recording of my younger self learning how to improvise, it probably sounded like I was hitting a baby with a cat.

If you have a question, drop it in the comments in this article or on the Youtube video.
